History of the Institute
Among one of the intitutes to organize and carry out the master's and doctoral programs, the Graduate School of Social Sciences was establihed in 1982.The School initially included only the master's and doctoral programs in ITU Faculty of Architecture.
All master's and doctoral programs related to architecture and urbanism were transferred to the ITU Institute of Science, at the end of the academic year of 1984-1985. Starting from the 1985-86 academic year, Fine Arts Disciplines of Art and Music Arts Department's graduate programs, and in the 1986-87 academic year, History of Art, Business and Economics programs were founded.
The School started its education in the 1987-88 academic year in the field of Visual and Peripheral Art as part of Fine Arts Department. As of 1987-88 academic year, Turkish Folk Dances program was added to the existing Turkish Art Music and Turkish Folk Music programs in the Music Art Department. Since the first graduates came out of the Music Art Department and the Management Science Department at the end of the 1988 Summer Term, two Proficiency in Art programs in Music Art Department, and a PhD program in the Management Science Department were opened and students were accepted to these programs.
The graduate program in Musicology was started in 1995-96 academic year, and the PhD program in Music History was started in 1996-97 academic year. In the 1998-99 academic year, the non-thesis executive MBA for administrators, in the 1999-2000 academic year the Music graduate program, and in the 2000-01 academic year the Science, Technology and Society graduate program were started as part of evening education. In the 2001-02 academic year, Housing and Earthquake Graduate Program started, followed by two graduate programs, Economy and Tourism Design and Management Graduate Programs in 2002-03 academic year. In 2006, Endüstri Ürünleri Takı ve Aksesuar Tasarımı evening program, and in 2006-07 academic year, Political Studies program and Interior Design graduate programs were started. A PhD program in Economy was started in 2011. In 2012, a PhD program in Political and Social Thought, and a graduate program in Musicology, and a graduate program in Music Theory and Composition were started.
Two new graduate programs will be offered starting 2014-15 academic year: Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management non-thesis evening program, and Instrument-Vocal Performance Graduate Program.
